The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) is the full teaching qualification for the further education and skills sector, the established route towards qualified teacher status in FE. It asks for substantial written work alongside your teaching practice, and the mandatory units carry most of the writing load. This pack gives you exemplar answers across them.
What the qualification covers
The mandatory units typically include:
- theories and models of learning applied to your own practice;
- developing, delivering and evaluating inclusive teaching and learning;
- assessment and its role across the learner journey;
- curriculum and its context in the sector;
- wider professional practice and your own development.
What is in the pack
Exemplar answers written by teacher educators who have taught and marked at Level 5. You will see how to write about theory without it floating away from your classroom, how to analyse a model of learning against what actually happened in a session, and how to evidence inclusive practice with real learner examples rather than platitudes. The professional practice unit answers show the level of critical reflection the diploma actually rewards.
Who it suits
Teachers and trainers working in colleges, independent training providers, adult and community education and work based learning, with substantial teaching hours behind them or ahead of them. If you completed the Level 4 certificate and are stepping up, the pack shows exactly what changes at Level 5.
How to use it
Read the exemplar for the unit you are writing, then build your answer on your own learners, your own subject and your own sessions. The diploma rewards critical reflection applied to genuine practice, so the more of your teaching that reaches the page, the stronger the work.
Teacher educator support
Our tutors have trained FE teachers for years and know exactly what the assignments are asking for. One to one Zoom tutorials run in 30 minute to 90 minute lengths. View tutor sessions or contact us.
Questions we are asked
How many teaching hours does the DET need? Expect a substantial teaching practice requirement across the course, including observed sessions with real learners, usually around 100 hours.
Is this the qualification for QTLS? The DET is the usual starting point, with professional formation afterwards through the Society for Education and Training.
Is this the same as the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching? The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills) is the newer successor to the DET. If you are studying the newer diploma, see our Level 5 Diploma in Teaching answers pack.
