The Level 5 Diploma in Leading and Managing an Adult Care Service is the registered manager’s qualification for adult social care in England. It replaced the adults management pathway of the old Level 5 leadership diploma, and it is the qualification regulators expect registered managers to hold or be working towards. It asks for strategic evidence: governance, quality assurance and leadership, not just good practice on the floor.

What the qualification covers

The diploma is built around running the whole service:

  • leading and managing the service, including governance and regulatory requirements;
  • recruiting, developing and supervising teams, and managing performance;
  • quality assurance, risk management and continuous improvement;
  • person centred practice and positive risk taking at service level;
  • partnership working with families, professionals and the wider system.

What is in the pack

Exemplar answers written by practitioners who have registered managed care services and assessed this diploma. You will see how to evidence leadership decisions and their impact on people using the service, how to write quality assurance cycles that read like real governance rather than templates, and how to structure the supervision and performance management work the people units ask for. The regulatory and partnership units are covered in depth.

Who it suits

Registered managers, deputy managers and team leaders moving into service management in care homes, supported living and domiciliary care. The diploma is assessed through your practice as a leader, so you need management responsibility for a service or a team.

How to use the answers well

Strong management evidence shows judgement in real situations. Use the exemplars to see the expected depth and structure, then write from your own service: your team, your people who use the service, your audits and your improvement work, anonymised as your assessor directs.
