The Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement, usually just called CAVA, qualifies you to assess both in the workplace and in classroom or training settings. It is the fullest assessor qualification, and it is the one most employers ask for when they advertise assessor roles. The written work is substantial, and this pack exists so you can see exactly what good looks like before you write your own answers.

What the qualification covers

CAVA has three units:

  • Understanding the principles and practices of assessment, the theory unit.
  • Assessing competence in the work environment.
  • Assessing vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.

The theory unit asks you to explain planning, methods, fairness, record keeping and quality assurance in writing. The two practical units then expect evidence: observation records, assessment plans, feedback records and work products from real learners.

What is in the pack

You get exemplar written answers for the theory unit, plus worked examples of the documents the practical units ask for, including observation write ups that read the way an experienced assessor writes them. Everything is based on genuine assessment practice, so you can see how to connect methods to real learners rather than writing in the abstract. There is also guidance on collecting evidence without drowning in paperwork, which is the mistake most new assessors make.

Who the pack suits

Trainee assessors use it to understand the standard before their first attempt. Practising assessors returning to study use it to refresh their writing and check they have not picked up bad habits. Either way, the guidance is the same: use the exemplars as a model, then anchor every answer in your own learners and your own assessment context.

A real person if you need one

If you would like to talk through a unit with an assessor who has done the job for years, we offer one to one Zoom tutorials in 30 minute, 45 minute, 1 hour and 90 minute lengths. View tutor sessions or contact us.

The pack is a digital download, available the moment your order completes.

Questions we are asked

Is CAVA the same qualification as TAQA? CAVA is the current name for the full assessor certificate that replaced TAQA. If you have been asked for either, this is the qualification.

Do the answers cover all three units? Yes, including the theory unit and worked examples of the practical evidence for both assessment environments.

I have not assessed yet. Will the pack still help? Yes. It shows you what good assessment records look like before you make your first attempt, which is exactly when most people need to see one.
