This Level 2 certificate is the standard knowledge qualification for staff supporting people with learning disabilities, in care services, supported living, education and community settings. The mandatory units ask you to show real understanding of what good support looks like, and this pack gives you exemplar answers for every one of them.
What the qualification covers
The mandatory units typically include:
- understanding the context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities;
- principles of safeguarding and protection;
- communication and positive interaction;
- person centred support and positive risk taking;
- supporting individuals to access services and maintain health and wellbeing.
What is in the pack
Exemplar answers written by practitioners who have supported people with learning disabilities throughout their careers. The answers show how to write about dignity, choice and inclusion with genuine examples rather than textbook phrases, and how to handle the safeguarding and risk questions in the measured, practical tone the assessors expect. Where a unit asks for reflection, the pack shows how to draw on ordinary working life for the evidence.
Who it suits
Support workers and teaching assistants working towards the certificate through a college or a workplace training programme. If you are new to learning disability support, the pack also gives you the professional vocabulary the written work expects, which is often the hardest part when you are starting out.
Using the exemplars properly
Read the model answer, then write your own using the people you support and the service you work in. The unit criteria reward understanding applied to real situations, so your own examples are what carry the answer, not the wording of the exemplar.
Practitioner support

Questions we are asked
Is this qualification knowledge based? Yes, which is why the standard rests on your written answers. You do not need workplace observations to complete it.
I work in a school, not a care service. Is it still relevant? Yes. The principles are the same and the exemplars show you how to apply them to an education setting.
Do the answers cover positive risk taking? Yes, including how to write about enabling choice while keeping people safe, which is the area candidates most often underplay.
