The Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care is the qualification for senior care workers and lead practitioners in adult social care. It took over from the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care as the regulated standard for adult care in England, so if you are moving up from a Level 2 qualification, this is where the written work gets more demanding. The diploma is assessed through your practice, so the evidence has to come from your own service and your own service users.

What the qualification covers

The core of the diploma is the practice every senior role leans on:

  • person centred practice, choice and independence;
  • safeguarding adults, duty of care and duty of candour;
  • communication and developing relationships in care settings;
  • health, safety and safe medication practice;
  • personal development and leading others within your role.

What is in the pack

Exemplar answers written by assessors who have worked in adult care, covering the knowledge units and showing how to structure competence evidence. You will see the depth expected for safeguarding and duty of candour scenarios, how to evidence person centred practice with real examples, and how the medication and information handling questions are best answered. The pack also shows how to write about mentoring and supporting colleagues, which the senior units ask for.

Who it suits

Senior care workers, lead practitioners and experienced staff stepping up in care homes, supported living and domiciliary services. You need a role with some responsibility for others, because part of the diploma is assessed through how you lead and support.

How to use the answers well

Assessors know the textbook answers. What gains credit is your own service, your own residents and your own judgement calls. Read an exemplar, note how it links knowledge to practice, then write your version from your setting, anonymising people as your assessor directs.

Help from a practitioner

If a unit is holding you up, an hour with a qualified care assessor usually sorts it. One to one Zoom tutorials run in 30 minute to 90 minute lengths. View tutor sessions or contact us.

Questions we are asked

Is this the same as the old Health and Social Care Level 3? It is the qualification that replaced it for adult care in England. The content is close, so people moving across recognise much of it.

Do I need a senior role? You need a role where you support or supervise others, at least informally, because the leadership units are assessed through that.

Does the pack cover medication and safeguarding? Yes, both in depth. They are the units assessors scrutinise most closely and the ones candidates ask us about first.
