The Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare is the qualification for people working in children’s homes and other residential settings in England. It replaced the residential pathway of the older Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce, and it is the qualification residential employers expect to see in practice roles. If you are a residential support worker or key worker working towards it, the written work sits alongside your practice, and most people find the hardest part is putting what they already do into words.

What the qualification covers

The diploma builds around residential practice:

  • understanding how children and young people develop in residential care;
  • safeguarding and protecting children and young people in residential settings;
  • supporting well being, relationships and positive behaviour;
  • professional practice, teamwork and the regulatory framework that governs children’s homes;
  • supporting children and young people who have experienced trauma, loss or separation.

What is in the pack

Exemplar answers for the written and knowledge units, written by practitioners who have worked in residential childcare and assessed the qualification. You will see the depth expected when writing about attachment and trauma, how to evidence safeguarding decisions in a residential context, and how to link day to day practice to the standards your home is inspected against.

Who it suits

Residential support workers, key workers and senior practitioners in children’s homes, residential special schools and other registered settings. Because the diploma is assessed through your practice, you need a workplace, and the exemplars are built around that reality.

How to use the answers well

The strongest evidence comes from your own home, your own young people and your own shift decisions. Treat each exemplar as a model of depth and structure rather than text to submit. Read it, note how it links theory to a real situation, then write your version using anonymised examples from your setting, as your assessor directs.

Help from a practitioner

If a unit is not clicking, an hour with a qualified assessor usually moves it along. One to one Zoom tutorials run in 30 minute to 90 minute lengths. View tutor sessions or contact us.

Questions we are asked

Is this the qualification for children’s homes? Yes. It is the diploma residential employers in England expect for practice roles, taking over from the older workforce diploma.

Do I need to be working in a children’s home? Yes. The diploma is assessed through workplace competence, so you need a role with children and young people in a residential setting.

Does the pack cover trauma and attachment? Yes. The units on development, trauma and behaviour are covered in depth, because they are the ones candidates ask about most.
